BACK IN 2004, when DecoratorsBest.com launched, it was the first e-commerce site allowing everyday people to buy trade-only fabrics and wallpaper. Big names like Robert Allen signed on right away, with other heavy hitters following suit.
Having successfully weathered the rise of e-commerce, business booms. "What I like to do is take a certain amount of proift and put that back into the company," says Barbara Karpf, the brand's founder and president. "Whether it is expanding our reach with marketing or investing in technology, we're looking at new products all the time."

Designing With Wallpaper That Wows

April 14, 2021
With myriad styles and textures, there's no reason for boring walls Wallpaper is a little bit like magic. It can add a sense of artistry to any space or makeover the mood of a room without changing anything in it.
Today's wallpaper comes in myriad styles, which can instantly dial up the design quotient, said DeAnna Hain, executive director of marketing for York Wall Coverings in York, Pennsylvania. "Within a space, the walls take up the most square footage, so it's a major opportunity to express your style through color, pattern and texture," she said. Wallpaper also helps set the tone, whether warm and inviting, bright and colorful, or calm and relaxing. Wallpaper can also enhance a room by adding dimension and interest. For example, natural grasscloth infuses texture and color, whereas a strong pattern is an exciting backdrop for decor, said New York-based Barbara Karpf, founder and president of DecoratorsBest, an online retailer for high-end textiles and wallpapers.

Artistic Flair
Beyond stripes, geometrics and florals, one of the most interesting iterations of wallpaper is in mural form. "They cover the wall and provide unique art at the same time," Ms. Karpf said. Once available only as a hand-painted decorative feature, wallpaper murals now come in a wide array of patterns that can feel like an immersive art installation. Custom-printed papers from companies like Calico take your wall size into account to create murals without cutting off the motifs. They'll even render the mural as it would appear on your walls for approval.

Application Made Easy
"Making wallpaper easy to remove has fundamentally changed the game," Ms. Hain said. Her company offers Premium Peel & Stick iterations in everything from geometrics and botanicals to textures and metallics, as well as traditional wallpaper that features Surestrip technology, which has an innovative pre-pasted adhesive backing that allows for easy installation and removal. "You can constantly update your space as your design tastes and preferences evolve," she said.
And although peel-and-stick wallpaper has been on the market for several years, it's now available from upscale design brands, Ms. Karpf said. "Scalamandre is launching its iconic Zebra pattern in peel-and-stick ," she said.

5 Spring Cleaning Hacks That Just Aren't Worth Your Time

March 30, 2021
It turns out that not all aspects of spring cleaning are equal—there are some hacks that are totally worth implementing, and there are others that you're better off skipping as you refresh your space for the season.
We spoke with designers to get the details on the spring cleaning steps that people often view as key or time-saving, but really aren't worth pursuing after all. Take a look below before you dive into your tidying.

03 of 05 Cleaning Upholstery Too Frequently
"Almost all designer fabric needs to be dry deaned professionally. However, unless you are excessively using your upholstery, there is not a pressing need to clean it annually. If your upholstery is being used excessively, I recommend saving yourself the time and getting it cleaned professionally." —Barbara Karpf, founder and CEO of Decorator's Best

These 12 Removable Wallpaper Designs Give Paint a Run for Its Money

As anyone who's ever thought "I have nothing to wear" while gazing at an overflowing closet knows, the quick fix to an uninspiring wardrobe is buying a new pair of vintage jeans (or whatever their fashion kryptonite may be). After all, a pair of jeans won't set anyone back too much. However, most people can't just go out and buy a new sofa or coffee table whenever they feel like their living room could use a similar refresh. Enter removable wallpaper, a super simple way to give your space a makeover without spending more than you'd want.
The best thing about temporary wallpaper is that there is zero commitment involved, making it ideal for all of the renters out there who want their security deposit back one day. Go ahead, elevate your home decor with a unique wallpaper design.

Willow Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
This charming pattern is Joanna Gaines-approved, making it one of our all-time favorites. She designed it exclusively for textile giant York Wallcoverings with anyone on a budget in mind. In our opinion, the Willow removable wallpaper is bold enough to add a touch of charisma without going overboard courtesy of the muted, easy-on-the-eyes hues.

Serious Question: How are We Supposed to Find Design Inspo These Days?

March 21, 2021
On the other hand, DecoratorsBest's Barbara Karpf found her color inspiration at the intersection of real life and pop culture. "I first fell in love with Nicole Kidman's maxi green coat in "The Undoing" and began envisioning how that rich color would look in my NYC apartment," she says. "Then I became mesmerized by Amanda Gorman and her Prada coat at the Inauguration. Gorman's words and her glorious coat captivated my being and filled me with hope, and now my apartment will have bursts of yellow in it."
It's so easy to glide through each day, especially when they all start to blend together. However, take a cue from Cannon and Karpf by taking note of the beauty in your everyday moments.

Follow these renter-friendly hacks to transform a drab bathroom into a chic sanctuary.
One of the many lessons the last year has taught us is the importance of reconnecting with our homes, a sentiment that feels especially relevant as we wait out the final dregs of winter. And after having tackled some serious renovations on the rest of my apartment, I couldn't fight the urge to troubleshoot my bathroom too.

Eight Interior Design Trends We'll See In 2021

December 30, 2020
2020 was an important year for design because we all spent so much time at home due to the pandemic. The importance of our living spaces increased exponentially as our homes became our offices, classrooms, and gyms. The result was people wanting to change things up, upgrade, and create privacy in ways the ever-popular open floor plan that so many of us have just doesn't provide.
Bold Walls
Wallpaper murals are another option. "An affordable way to add drama to your home, murals are art in their own right," founder and president of DecoratorsBest Barbara Karpf, tells me. "They cover the wall and provide unique art at the same time."

Choosing Upholstery Fabric Can Be Paralyzing. Here's How to Break Through.

A self-confessed binge-swatcher—overwhelmed by the fabric options now available to non-decorators—seeks help re-covering a vintage chair.
"How often do amateur decorators end up hating the fabric they choose?" I asked Barbara Karpf, president of online shop Decorators Best, which sells 150,000 different kinds of fabrics.
"The only time we have a problem is if someone doesn't order a sample first," she said.
"I think I have samples of almost all 150,000 of your fabrics," I said.
"People sometimes order a bigger piece of fabric so they can really see how it looks draped over a chair," she said. "We had a client who kept ordering one-yard pieces of things. She ended up using some of those on throw pillows."
But if I ordered one-yard lengths of the 25 fabrics I was considering, at an average price of $150 a yard, that would end up costing...oh dear.
"Do you offer design advice to customers?" I asked.
"We give general information, but since I'm not in their home working with them, it's almost irresponsible, I think, to give specific advice," Mrs. Karpf said.

The interior designer responsible for the décor of the Obama White House finds lots to learn in American decorator Billy Baldwin's understated take on swank.

Border The Flowers
In "Billy Baldwin: The Great American Decorator" (Rizzoli, 2010), by Adam Lewis, we're told Baldwin swapped out plain white linen for this Brunschwig & Fils La Portugaise Print Brown Stripe upholstery. "Now the room is alive, and there is a duet going on with the beams and the chintz," he is quoted as saying. Between peacocking flora, the chocolate stripes add strictness. Said Mr. Smith, "It's balanced and handsome and pretty masculine for a floral."

Dressing your walls to add more depth and recreate your space.
When it comes to dressing your walls, there's paint, there's wallpaper and then there's textured wallpaper. It's an extra layer that creates more interest and adds a sense of depth in any space by way of a tactile touch.
Picking the right iteration for your room takes a little know-how, which is why we turned to top design pros. Here, advice on decorating with wall-to-wall style.

Make a Statement
"Textured wallpaper adds three-dimensional depth, drama and warmth to a space. There is a subliminal response to textured walls that evokes an inner feeling that a flat, painted wall cannot provide. And, if walls are not perfect, textured wallcoverings will cover a multitude of sins.
"Use textured wallcoverings in whatever color you might have selected for painting the walls. Dark textures add drama and can be accentuated with uplighting.
"Grasscloths, including sisal and jute, come in a wide range of colors and are often used instead of painting an entire room. Patterns can be printed on grasscloth and are ideal for statement walls. For a luxurious look, embroidered sisal is an outstanding choice.
"Silk wallcovering adds elegance to an entry and dining room. Brick and faux bois are ideal for lofts, country homes and family rooms."

How to change gears and pivot your business, according to pros who have done it before
After running an interiors firm, this former designer went on to become the founder, president, and CEO of DecoratorsBest, an online fabric and wallpaper retailer.
Over 15 years ago, my husband gave me a laptop for my birthday. My plan was to create a business that would allow me to take my laptop and travel around the world while working. I started exploring interior-design-related subjects and realized no one was selling designer fabric and wallpaper.
In retrospect, it was the perfect time to start my business. HGTV was gaining in popularity, and people wanted to do their own projects. They needed a place to purchase designer fabric and wallpaper, and DecoratorsBest filled this void. It was the first company to sell to-the-trade-only fabric and wallpaper brands to consumers and designers online.
I am very proud of my technological accomplishments because I had to work so hard to learn them. I also learned that niche marketing is a very powerful business concept and that customer service is one of our greatest selling points.

We explore designer Katie Ridder’s deep-rooted love of Bunny Mellon’s grand potting room—and share tips to help you create your own
By
Kathryn O’Shea-Evans
NO BUNNY—whether cottontail or French Angora—ever came across a garden shed quite like Bunny Mellon’s. In 1960, at what was then a nearly 4,000-acre Upperville, Va., estate called Rokeby Farms, the heiress to the Listerine fortune created a showpiece of a potting hut.
New York interior designer Katie Ridder contentedly toils in the three gardens (formal, woodland and cutting) of her own comparatively modest 7-acre weekend retreat outside the city. She considers Mellon’s shed one of her favorite interiors. “It’s such a happy... Read More

A vaulted ceiling webbing by hand-painted "bamboo lattice" appears as floaty as the glass-topped greenhouses that flank the room, and balances the visually weighty faux shelving. "This feels like a conservatory in the middle of Paris where you can go and have a cup of tea and a scone," said Ms. Ridder, who noted the additional layer of patterns adds depth to the room. Cover your own ceiling with Garden Lattice wallpaper in a similarly tawny hue from Waverly Wallpaper. $26 a roll. decoratorsbest.com

THE WALL-TO-WALL-CHARM OF HOME MURALS

August 13, 2020
“A mural adds drama and a custom look to any space. The style should be complementary to your home. The mural will be a focal point in a room, so the colors should work well with the décor and the scene should relate to the surroundings.
Foyers and dining rooms are my favorite spaces for murals. In a foyer, a mural sets the tone for the home. In a dining room, a mural adds a sense of drama and is a great conversation starter. A large bedroom is another room that can be enhanced with a mural. I also love covering a screen with a mural, which adds dimension to a room and can also be used as a room divider.
“I like the cohesive look and drama of covering an entire wall. However, a mural might simulate a painting and it could be very effective on just a portion of a wall.”
“If a mural is in a high-traffic area, a coat of water-based polyurethane with a matte finish will protect it. Test a small section first to see if the colors bleed. If there is sunlight on the mural, use a ceramic film on the window or a window shade to block light during the sunny part of the day.”

SQUARING AWAY YOUR WALLS

August 13, 2020
When walls collide with geometric shapes, an uninspired space can suddenly have a strong point of view. Whether iterated as a patterned wallpaper, mirrors, or artwork in shapely frames, the effec can be subtle or statement making.
New York-based Barbara Karpf, fonder and president of DecoratorsBest, an online retailer for high-end textiles and wallpapers, recommends mixing different geometric patterns together when they have varied scales. "A small, tight pattern works well with a large open geometric- one pattern could have a touch of a color that is prominent in the other pattern," she says.

SCHOOL IS IN SESSION: THESE ARE THE TOP 15 INTERIOR DESIGN STYLES TO KNOW NOW

August 13, 2020
One of the main rules of interior design is to always "edit, edit, edit"—but that should come with a caveat. "Edit, edit, edit"—unless you're a maximalist at heart.
"More is always more," says designer and founder of Andrew Martin, Martin Waller. "Layer texture and pattern to create excitement in a home—more rugs, more art, more objects."
This no-holds-barred style is all about mixing bold patterns, bright colors, unexpected textures, and more in a technicolor whirlwind that delights the senses and always leaves a new detail to be noticed. There are very few rules when it comes to maximalism, but we always think wallpaper (like this one, created in collaboration with Waller, from DecoratorsBest) is a good starting point, since it immediately ups the ante of the interior without crowding it spatially.

The guest room: A mod rocking chair and a guitar that Jason has owned for years just so happened to match, a cool personal touch in this room. "A friend found the art on the street, it's made on a cardboard box that was flattened out," says Jason. "I like this piece visually but I crossed out 'Black People' because I don't think it's true."

May 18, 2020
I would be a millionnaire if I had a quarter for every email, comment and direct message I get on Instagram from readers asking how they can get access to trade fabrics and textiles without hiring an interior designer or decorator. The reality is there are some textile lines you simply cannot access without working with a designer or someone “in the trade.” However, there are ways for consumers to find quite a few of the most popular brands used amongst designers and one of those sources is Decorators Best. "Home decor fabric and wallpaper merchant finds success through StoreFront’s Search Engine Marketing Services. When Barbara Karpf launched DecoratorsBest back in 2004, she didn’t know what to expect. Fortunately she found StoreFront and was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to get her site up and running. But just getting a site up and running doesn’t necessarily lead to success if you can’t drive the right traffic to your site. Pleased with the services she received in helping her launch her online store, Karpf elected to turn to StoreFront when she needed help with search engine optimization. "Our rankings improved since we started utilizing StoreFront. In the last six months, our sales have more than doubled," said Barbara Karpf, President of DecoratorsBest. "We also decreased our pay-per-click advertising expenses and are much more profitable. The traffic to our site is substantial and constant. It increases monthly. A majority of our inquiries turn into sales. We’re so busy we need more help." Karpf attributes much of her success to keyword selection. StoreFront’s experts helped her select a set of keywords specific to the products her site carried, which produced better, more cost-effective results than the broader keywords she used previously. Currently, searches for keywords like designer drapery fabric, and designer wallpaper all result in a front page listing for DecoratorsBest.com on both Google and Yahoo. DecoratorsBest features the best home decorating upholstery fabrics and designer drapery fabrics plus discount designer wallpaper offered in design centers. Many decorating fabric items are sold exclusively to interior designers for their clients and are now available to the general public through their site. And now, through the help of StoreFront’s Search Engine Optimization Services, they are much easier to find.
