Wallpaper Measurements: A Reference Guide

Design by Camille Saum Interior Design

Why did I only receive half of my order?
If you ordered single rolls please note that many manufacturers ship in double rolls.

How many rolls do I need?
One of our most frequently asked questions is about how many rolls to order. While we can't suggest how much you should buy, we do offer our Wallpaper Calculator for rough estimates. However, we highly recommend asking a professional wallpaper installer who will assist in measuring your space, and give you an accurate roll-count. many manufacturers ship in double rolls. If you ordered 6 single rolls, you may only receive 3 double rolls.

How do I measure?
Measure the height and width of each wall you would like to cover. Provide all of the wallpaper measurements including the length, width, horizontal and vertical repeats to your installer. Typically, you'll want to order 5-15% extra to account for waste.

How many square feet does a roll cover?
We get this question a lot. As a general rule, we've found the following usually holds true for standard sized wallpaper:
  •  Single Roll: 28 square feet
  •  Double Roll: 56 square feet
  •  Euro Roll: 56.38 square feet.

DecoratorsBest Glossary of Terms

Design by Alessandra Branca

What is a repeat? What is a half drop?
Wallpaper terminology sounds exotic and confuses many of our customers so we created the DecoratorsBest Glossary. The most important term is "repeat" for the pattern. The repeat is the vertical distance between where the pattern is identical again. That distance can be less than an inch or as much as the entire width of the wallpaper. Our glossary contains many other terms which your installer is familiar with and will help you understand your project.
Clearly illustrated in the photo above, a half drop repeats at the ceiling line on every other strip and the design runs diagonally.

I'd like 6 double rolls...
This is a misnomer and needs clarification! Years ago, almost all American rolls were a standard length. Today — not so much. Roll lengths can vary greatly depending on the manufacturer. Your installer may say "double rolls" but it's best to get the exact information. Are they referring to 12 single rolls or is it 6 European rolls? Before ordering make sure you have the correct information.

Wallpaper for the Washroom

What is the best wallpaper for a bathroom?
Bathrooms tend to be exposed to a lot of moisture. We recommend either a vinyl or washable wallpaper for easy clean up. However, if you find that you've fallen in love with a particular pattern, you can apply a transparent layer of varnish over the wallpaper to seal and protect it!

Can grasscloth be used in a bathroom?
Grasscloth can be used in a powder room, but not a frequently used bathroom. Have you seen vinyl grasscloth? It's a terrific alternative

All About Grasscloth

Design by DMAR Interiors

"Grasscloth" is an all encompassing word for arrowroot, sisal, hemp and jute and is a natural material for enhancing any room and is readily available in a wide variety of colors. Often grasscloth is made from woven fibers, and best used in low traffic areas. However basket weaves are sturdier and are well-suited for higher traffic areas.

Notable characteristics of grasscloth are:
    •  The Panel Effectl: Don't mind the seams, each piece is unique and gives it a hand-made panel look.
    •  Absorbent Backing: The woven paper is often backed with rice paper - it can soak up quite a lot of paste, and care must be taken to avoid stains while installing.
    •  Natural Dyes: The natural dyed papers are hydrophobic and MUST avoid contact with water. Try a vacuum when you need to clean them!
