Fella-Friendly Design Tips for Your Resident Sports Fan

The phrase “man cave” doesn’t always evoke the most sophisticated picture, does it? The good news is: it’s possible to create a beautiful, well-decorated space that everyone in the family can enjoy, on Super Bowl Sunday and every other day of the year, too. We consulted a few expert interior designers to get their tips.

Robert Jenny Design

In this apartment, Robert Jenny Design balanced the masculinity of the cognac leather sofa with textured decorative pillows and a curvy acrylic coffee table.

Compromise was the name of the game in this space. Robert Jenny Design advised, “Keep the wallpaper’s color palette monochromatic in order to appeal to a more structured sensibility, but play with a stylized graphic floral pattern to appeal to those with a more feminine aesthetic.”

The design challenge presented by the multi-use floor plan was handled with the wallpaper’s unifying pattern, which created a relationship between the living area and the kitchen space.

Robert Jenny Design also offered a helpful tip for dividing walls: “Alternate finishes to cater to each space. The warmth of the stacked stone in the living area is perfect for game day, while the formal finish of a rich stained walnut in the dining area is ideal for a stylish dinner party.”

Mead Design

Mary Mead of Mead Design told us that the team created this living space with the male especially in mind.

“We felt like the style of this home was very guy-friendly and we used harder materials to create the look,” she said.

The firm used reclaimed wood for the wall behind the TV, creating an attractive, distracting element that draws the eye away from the electronics. The best part about this idea? It’s easy to replicate with a faux finish wallpaper.

Garrison Hullinger Interior Design

When designing any space, masculine or otherwise, Garrison Hullinger Interior Design told us they always keep the individual’s interests and lifestyle in mind throughout the design development and execution.

Looking at this basketball-themed space, it’s not hard to guess the interests of this particular individual. The client’s goal was to create a space where he and his friends would feel like they had “gone into the city and ended up in the basement bar of an old building.”

The sectional and twin ottomans are spacious and comfortable – perfect for a large gathering with the guys – but the stylish throw pillows and mid-century wingback chairs bring in a polished element.

Alder and Tweed

Classy masculine decor shouldn’t stop at the living areas, and in this guest room, Lynsey and Heather Humphrey of Alder & Tweed aimed for comfort, entertainment and warmth in addition to a stunning design.

“We made sure the carpet was extra plush like a cozy sweater, the bed was covered in comfortable fabrics, the walls were covered in warm wood paneling and the TV was, of course, supersized,” Lynsey told us. “Taking care of the man in your life is all about making sure that they have all their ‘creature comforts.'”

And with those stunning geometric textiles and shimmering drapes, this bedroom is elegant enough for even the most discerning guest – male or female.

Do you have any spaces in your home that are specifically geared toward your guy? If so, how do you make sure everyone in the family can enjoy it?
