4 Incredibly Clever Ways to Use Wallpaper

We’ve all seen wallpaper applied in its most classic uses: a statement powder room, a traditional dining room, a charming nursery. As wallcoverings rise in popularity, though, we’re seeing more designers thinking outside the box. We spoke to a few and got their exclusive tips!

Wallpaper is often seen in more self-contained rooms, as it can be a challenge to incorporate into an open floor plan. Gin Braverman wanted to use this pearlescent print – “[it] helps to create a dramatic entrance and sets the tone for guests when they first arrive” – so she found a way to create a flow between the foyer and the rest of the home.

“If a wall is visible, consider choosing a wallpaper pattern that works well with other rooms in the house,” Gin told us. “In this photo, the color of the wallpaper blends in with the walls, but because of the slight metallic sheen, it creates a subtle pattern that does not take away or fight with the other rooms and artwork that are visible from the entry.”

Gin also ensured that the furniture in the space complemented the wallpaper instead of competing with it.

“When selecting wallpaper, consider the furniture in the room,” Gin advised. “For example, depending on the time of day it was, the console design looks like it’s casting a shadow of the wallpaper on the walls.”

Designer Keith Baltimore is a great champion of wallpaper, frequently using it in his stunning designs.

In the photo below, Keith employed a budget-friendly method, restricting the striped damask to custom panels to highlight the stairway and moldings.

“Wallpaper used in unexpected places adds an element of surprise and interest to the space; ceilings, nooks, closets, architectural features such as wall panels,” Keith said.

If you really love a pattern, why not use it everywhere? Barbara Hyde Evans took advantage of a matching floral fabric and wallpaper for an entire master suite, including the bedroom, bathroom, hallway and office.

“I love to use wallpaper of medium scale to tie the rooms together,” Barbara told us. “A small print can look too dainty for the size of a master suite.”

“Keep in mind that if you are putting wallpaper in a full bath, then it must have very good ventilation, and you have to use it!” Barbara warned.

“To add some drama, we added wallpaper to the ceiling and had the light fixture trims and speaker painted in a complimentary color so that they blended better with the paper,” LeeAnn told us.
