3 Beautiful Decorating Trends to Try in 2016

This year’s hottest home trends are related to two of our favorite things: sun and shimmer. And in the middle of winter, what could be more inspiring than the allure of a tropical isle, a glowing golden sheen, or a sun-drenched space?

Return of the Sunroom

Sunrooms aren’t exactly a new concept; nonetheless, this year, many new homeowners and renovators will find a way to add a dedicated space chock full of windows and natural light. In an era of nonstop tech connectivity and high stress, we need the extra vitamin D more than ever! With a gorgeous view, abundant sunshine, and protection from the elements, sunrooms are an ideal way to get the best of both worlds.

To prevent fading from UV exposure, we recommend utilizing indoor/outdoor fabrics.

A sunroom is an excellent place to have some fun with your furnishings – perhaps a pair of swinging sofas, like the ones designer Thom Filicia used below?

This room, in an Adirondacks lake house, takes on a treehouse vibe, and the natural textured elements enhance the look.

And in the space below, designer Susanna Samaniego of 4 Corners International Design Concepts highlighted the multitude of windows with turquoise casings and warmed up the tile floors with a natural fiber rug. We love the mid-century elements mixed with the ethnic-printed pillows! For a similar look, choose a casual solid textile for your main upholstery and layer in an indoor/outdoor rug and brightly-colored elements.

Graphic Tropics

We love palm leaves: oversized ones, intricate ones, emerald green ones – and now, stylized two-dimensional ones. This year’s tropical trend flattens and spaces out the colorful flora and fauna of a sultry, vibrant island escape. The resulting patterns are bold and graphic, giving a modern look to any space, whether they’re displayed on a set of throw pillows or a wallpaper.

Gilded Wallcoverings

The Pinterest 100 compiles ideas and trends for 2016 based on popular pins, and we were thrilled to see gilded metallic wallpaper on the list. We love tones like gold, rose gold and copper for their ability to instantly add warmth to a room, and wallcoverings have the added bonus of allowing light to softly reflect back, giving off a gentle glow.

Above, designer Elsa Soyars chose a metallic colorway to update a classic chinoiserie design.

“My tip on working with traditional elements, such as chinoiserie, damask, or floral is to mix them with other smart textures,” Elsa told us. “Create an unexpected look, have fun with it, don’t get locked into that particular period.”
