Exclusive Designer Tips from the 2015 Hampton Designer Showhouse

The fourteen annual Hampton Designer Showhouse couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. In the midst of a relentless New York City heat wave, we couldn’t wait to leave the crowded sidewalks to stretch our legs and feel a sea breeze. And, of course, to take in the sights of this year’s beautifully decorated Hamptons home!

After our visit, we spoke to a few of the talented designers who participated and got exclusive tips on how to recreate the looks at home. Read on for their advice!

Marlaina Teich Designs

Marlaina Teich used a gorgeous selection of intricate Beacon Hill fabrics in her bright, open kitchen, sticking with shades of blue to continue the nautical theme we saw throughout the home.

“I like to use my own kitchen as a place to experiment,” Marlaina told us. “It’s the perfect spot to try out new trends in color, wallpapers or to experiment with different vibes. Seriously neutral or fabulously fun, I like to layer color and pattern to create an inviting space.”

Marlaina’s tip: “The chevron design in the glass front cabinets can be easily recreated as a DIY Saturday afternoon project. Using chevron walllpaper, lay the pattern out centered on a piece of foam core, cut to the width and height of the cabinet space. Using a straight edge, trim the paper and use double tack mounting film to affix the wallpaper to the foam core. Climb up a step ladder and put the foam core in place. The best part: you can change this out for other patterns when you redecorate, the season’s change or the mood strikes.”

Elise Som Design Studio

Elise Som’s guest room was inspired by the unique Hamptons landscape, with shades of greens, browns and neutrals from the woods and surrounding farms, and blues and sea greens from the ocean and sandy beaches.

For a budget-friendly alternative to a chandelier, Elise hung five drum pendants at varying heights.

Elise’s tip: “When you have a dark room, using a metallic fabric or wallpaper draws the light in. This is why I used metallic wallpaper on the afternoon wall and also applied it to the doors in our guestroom. Be careful when using metallic wallpaper – make sure the wall is smooth, or else you will see all of the imperfections.”

Hagins and Mortimer Design

In the ethereal bedroom they designed, Elizabeth Hagins and Richard Mortimer stuck to a cool palette with shimmering, elegant fabrics by Duralee‘s H.C. Monogram brands. The Moravian star light fixture and unusual tree-inspired four-poster bed were the centerpieces of the space, creating a stunning focal point in the large room.

We loved the way Hagins & Mortimer used the metallic geometric wallpaper on the vaulted ceiling and door inset to add a touch of glamour without overwhelming the room.

Elizabeth’s tip: “To create a memorable room, less is more, so choose your pieces carefully and edit, edit, edit!”

Meredith Ostrom

For her designer showhouse debut, Meredith Ostrom was inspired by the natural habitat of the Hamptons. The theme of her powder room, called “Let’s Save the Whale,” was a socially-conscious play on Sag Harbor’s history as a whaling town. She applied starfish to the chair rail and ceiling with a hot glue gun to recreate the view of a starry night sky at sea.

“The aqua and white marbleized look of the paper reminded me of the ocean waves crashing,” Meredith told DecoratorsBest. For a subtly-themed space in your home, try using abstract patterns that are reminiscent of a key element.

Madcap Cottage

In the Hamptons, outdoor spaces are essential, so John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon of Madcap Cottage took great care with their covered porch design. Happily, their hard work was paid off with an eclectic, comfortable seating area.

From whimsical elephant motifs to bold stripes to Italian-inspired pottery, the large outdoor area was able to feature a wide range of styles because of its unifying color palette. Take note: even the modern planters by the pool fit into the color scheme!

Patricia Fisher Design

A great room’s role is to connect a number of other spaces, and as a result, it can be tricky to decorate. Patricia Fisher handled the challenge with aplomb, using a subdued palette and sleek, modern furnishings.

When an open floor plan necessitates consistency, don’t fall prey to the temptation of bland design. In Patricia’s great room, she was able to incorporate countless patterns without overpowering the surrounding area because the textiles all featured similar shades of grey.
